Potato planting

Today we planted potatoes in buckets and also sunflowers we had planted from seeds. We planted them in recycled take away coffee cups and watched them sprout on the windowsill in our class. The sunflowers are by the swimming pool along with the buckets.
We enjoy watching their progress each day!

How to ride a bike.
Your feet push the pedals around. The pedals push the chain around. The chain turns the back wheel, the handlebars turn the front wheel.

The fire truck comes visiting

The fire truck visited us today and we learnt to get down low and get out of a smokey house. We crawled under the black sheet and pretended it was smoke. We then all had a turn holding the hose and went through the back seat of the truck. We are going to write about this experience tomorrow!

Week 1 Term 4 2010

This week we got some new maths equipment and also enjoyed the old! Our new activity has magnets inside them to stick the blocks together. We also started to learn how to jump properly in preparation for long jump. Everyone had sore muscles at the end of it.

Master Chef 2010

What a great afternoon! Every student was involved in the baking and decorating of a chocolate cake and then presenting it to the class and extended whanau. Mr Lewis and Mrs Leonard tasted every cake and loved them all.
We all learnt how important it is to measure ingredients and follow a recipe.

Master chef

Master chef is coming to Heathcote Valley School on the 22nd of September.
Hold onto your aprons as the day promises to be a unique experience as four teams compete to win the title of master chef in the chocolate cake category.
Much testing and trialling will take place over the next two weeks as we prepare to go into battle to win the coveted title of "Top Master Chef Team 2010".

If you are available to help either by hosting a team and helping them bake at your home, or helping at the other end with afternoon tea please come and see me.
Students will travel in private cars to a chosen kitchen, be supervised by a parent and then bring the cake and the students back to school. Judging will take place at 2pm on the 22nd September and all whanau are welcome to attend and celebrate in the students' learning.

Karawhuia e hoa ma!
Go for it my friends!

More science- making sorbet

We were visited by Mrs Gordon and her icecream machine. We watched as plums turned from a liquid into a semi solid to become sorbet. All this action in only 20 minutes and it was delicious!

Making butter

This week we learnt how to make butter. We watched as cream turned into a solid, then separated into curds (fat solid) and whey (liquid).
Then we drained off the whey and had lovely yellow butter.

We all ate the butter spread on bread.

Science experiment

We froze coloured water, made predictions about what might happen and then we observed.
A little later in the afternoon our solid had turned into a green liquid as all three cubes melted together.

Parent Teacher Interviews

It has been great to meet with all the parents of room 4 and discuss with them the progress that the children are making. The children are all very fortunate to have such supportive parents and it was easy to see how loved the children are. Please remember you are welcome in room 4 at any time. We now have both armchairs on the mat so there is a spare seat beside our "star of the day" or you can hide down the back if you like!

Raranga Harakeke - Flax Weaving

To celebrate Maori Language week we spent the afternoon weaving and making a head band. We invited some tuakana from the senior school to help us weave a flax flower and also complete a head band made of cardboard. We looked at repeating Maori patterns and used these designs on our head bands.

The senior students were really helpful, kind and caring with us. They are great examples of Tall Learners and we hope that they come back again. A special thankyou goes to Rosie, Mrs Leonard's oldest daughter who came to teach us all how to weave.

Jelly Day

Today we had lots of fun making jelly! Next week we will make a shared book about the process of making jelly and use it as motivation for writing explanations.
